Arts & Culture Patron: Kevin Richards
Kevin Richards is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, graphic designer, and DJ. He studied Fine Art Photography at the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron. His work has been seen in galleries, publications, and public art installations. He has previous community experience as the Art Director for the Big Love Festival and Creative Director for the @Play Akron project. In addition, Kevin has created numerous pop-up shop opportunities throughout the city including locations like the Akron Art Museum, Musica, and the Northside District offering opportunities for other artists and makers to exhibit and sell their work.
What is your earliest memory of participating in arts & culture?
My earliest memory of the arts was drawing all the time as a child. I wanted to be a comic book artist and loved going to Kenmore Komics to pick up the latest issues and get inspired.
What was your first introduction to the arts & culture scene in Summit County?
My first introduction to the arts/culture scene in Summit County was at the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron. It was the first place I felt like I belonged. Like the work that I was creating mattered. Being in this creative environment had a profound effect on my life.
How do arts, culture, and environment impact your life in Summit County?
The arts in Summit County mean everything to me. Each day we create, we inspire others. It doesn’t take much to change our environment. A little creative magic and compassion go a long way.
What artist, cultural organization, or experience do you wish more people knew about in Summit County?
I’m sure a lot of people already know about Crafty Mart, but I think they are doing a tremendous job of helping artists/makers get started pursuing their passions
What is a can’t-miss activity in Summit County?
Hands down Porch Rokr is the can’t miss arts experience you must check out. It’s a beautiful place to let go and be free.
