Innovative Ingestibles at the Northside Marketplace (2 of 6)
In this blog series we will continue to learn about some of the Creatives of All Things Tasty who also happen to be vendors at an entrepreneurial co-op located at 21 Furnace Street in Akron. Today, the focus is on some spectacular sweets where you will meet Kassandra and Sam who own The Treatery, and the infamous baker extraordinaire behind Fat T’s cookies, Travis.
The Treatery
What’s the origin story behind The Treatery?
The Treatery is a micro version that is part of a bigger dream we have for NOMZ, our sandwich shop. Inspired by ice cream shops in New York City we wanted to offer unique flavors, with everything made from scratch, and ice cream that was made to order. We finish it off using innovative toppings to create an edible work of art. In the future, we hope to expand on the Treatery idea with a full bakery attachment. Just imagine the deliciousness that could be created – YUM!
How do you get to be creative in your work?
We find ourselves inspired by nature and art. Finding new produce with unique flavor profiles, naturally vibrant colors, like ube (purple yam) and other unique toppings, is where each flavor begins. Or even when we find ourselves in an ice cream shop, we deconstruct the flavors and ask, “How could we make this better?” No matter what, we’re always starting with an idea, putting it to the pan, and making something overly delicious as well as aesthetically interesting.
Which product are you most proud of?
Our ice cream tacos – we make the waffle “cones” from scratch – each with their own flavor to compliment the ice cream. We then make the ice cream to order, rolled into two big scrolls, and deck it out. Sam’s favorite dessert is the Nutella Banana. One of our most popular treats has a strawberry cheesecake flavor, which we call, “Strawberry Youth”.
In what ways were you creative as a child?
When I (Kassandra) was a kid, we had a musical dance group in our neighborhood, we’d dance to 90’s tracks and put on shows for the neighborhood – just looking to earn a little extra money to walk to the Portage Path store for candies and such. I’m an entrepreneur by heart what can I say? As an adult, I’ve been involved in so many forms of art from dance to circus arts, and even some graphic design.
What’s in development right now?
Our winter waffle menu! We make buttermilk waffles from scratch in a variety of flavors, make them to order then top then with your choice of ice cream. It’s awesome.
How do you get involved with art locally?
We like to support artists by hosting a variety of art-based events, from wine tastings with handmade chocolate by Sweet Bean, shows with Acid Cats, Marc Lee Shannon and DJs, like Brain Wreck, and craft-based events for kids with Smile Inside. We’re always seeking new partners to bring together and have a good time centered around great food, sweets, and lots of laughs!
